Collecting Uncirculated $5's

United States Note $5's offer a happy median between collecting Federal Reserve Note and Silver Certificate $5's. While not quite as challenging as the Federal Reserve Notes, there are more difficult varieties in this class than the Silver Certificates, particularly in the replacement notes. Just like Silver Certificates, the United States Notes are largely defined by their signature combination and block letters, since there are no districts on these notes.

There are two main styles of United States Notes in small size: The Series of 1928-1928F and the Series of 1953-1953C along with the Series of 1963. Both contain a fairly large number of notes which are easy to acquire. This is particularly true in the case of the Series of 1953 and 1963-era notes, where even replacement notes are relatively affordable.

THE 1928NOTES.COM COLLECTION

The following notes are part of the 1928notes.com collection. There are a few parameters for this collection and some exclusions. All notes in this collection are graded PMG UNC 62 or higher. No note has been admitted to this collection which does not have the EPQ designation. Exclusions from this collection include the entire Series of 1928E and 1928F.

For this collection, completion of a set has been defined as the acquisition of all standard notes surviving in uncirculated grades. Varieties and star notes are not considered a requisite for completion, but have been admitted as welcomed embellishments. Notes which are a part of this collection but do not meet the requisite grade and EPQ designation requirements are set against a gray background.

Comments

The key to this set is the D-A block. In high grade, this is one of the great block letter rarities of the entire United States Note series. One of the more striking features of the Series of 1928 is the bright white paper used. The inks and overprint also tend to be more rich than later series.
